The Cutty Sark was launched at Dumbarton in 1869, purpose-built for the China tea trade at a moment when that route was already being lost to steamships. She found her real purpose a decade later on the Australian wool run, where she repeatedly broke passage records. The Perth Mint has issued numerous ship-themed bullion rounds, and this piece is part of that broader program rather than marking any specific anniversary of the vessel.
The ship survived a serious fire in 2007 while undergoing restoration at Greenwich, where she has been dry-docked since 1954.
