Niue has operated a prolific commemorative coin program since the 1990s, licensing its sovereign issuing authority to foreign mints — primarily the New Zealand Mint — in exchange for a share of seigniorage revenue. This Chopin dollar is part of that arrangement, not a product of any particular local monetary need. The square flan is consistent with the New Zealand Mint's output for this series.
Frédéric Chopin died in Paris in 1849, almost certainly from tuberculosis, though a 2017 analysis of his preserved heart suggested pericarditis as a contributing factor.
