The Perth Mint has issued Chinese New Year dollar coins annually since 2012, targeting both circulation and the substantial Australian-Chinese community gift-giving market. The 2016 issue corresponds to the Year of the Monkey — the ninth animal in the twelve-year lunar cycle. Aluminium bronze was selected partly for its gold-like appearance, which carries auspicious associations in Chinese tradition.
These pieces do circulate but are frequently pulled from change and hoarded, meaning worn examples are genuinely harder to find than uncirculated ones.
