The caravel became the vessel of choice for Portuguese explorers in the 15th and 16th centuries partly because of its ability to sail windward — a capability most Mediterranean designs lacked. Solomon Islands has issued a long-running series of themed silver pieces marketed primarily to the European collector market, with distribution handled almost entirely outside the islands themselves. The coins see essentially no domestic circulation.
