| Obverse description | The obverse bears the fourth definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by engraver Susan Taylor, depicting the Queen in right-facing profile at approximately 77 years of age, bareheaded, wearing a necklace and drop earrings. The portrait is rendered in a refined, naturalistic style characteristic of Royal Canadian Mint collector issues of this period. The upper legend arcs around the effigy reading 'ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA', affirming her title by divine grace. |

In 1778, Cook's third and final voyage brought him to the west coast of Vancouver Island, where he spent nearly a month at Nootka Sound — the first documented European contact with the indigenous Nuu-chah-nulth people and the first recorded European landfall on what is now British Columbia. The visit triggered a geopolitical crisis a decade later when Spain and Britain nearly went to war over territorial claims to the inlet, resolved only by the Nootka Convention of 1790.
This issue belongs to the RCM's ongoing commemorative dollar program marking Canadian exploration history. The .9999 fine silver specification places it among the purer strikes in that series.
