The 1992 dollar was issued to mark the 125th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, a celebration that arrived during one of the most politically fraught periods in modern Canadian history — the Charlottetown Accord referendum, which would have restructured the constitutional relationship with Quebec, failed that same October. The commemorative program pushed forward regardless.
This was also the final year the Loon dollar appeared in its bronze-plated nickel composition before the Royal Canadian Mint transitioned to a aureate-plated nickel planchet the following year.
