The Canadian Arctic Expedition of 1913–1918 was one of the most ambitious and poorly fated scientific ventures in polar history. Commissioned by Ottawa under Vilhjalmur Stefansson, the expedition split into northern and southern parties; the northern party's ship, the Karluk, became icebound and eventually sank in the Chukchi Sea, stranding its crew on Wrangel Island — eleven of whom died before rescue.
This commemorative marks the centenary of that departure. The selective gold plating on .9999 fine silver was a production technique the RCM deployed frequently in this period to highlight specific design elements without full gilding.
