Part of the RCM's NHL team series issued ahead of the 2008–09 season, this circulating colored nickel dollar was one of twenty-three team-specific pieces released simultaneously — almost certainly the largest single-run of distinct circulation-quality commemoratives the Mint had produced under one program to that point. The Calgary Flames franchise itself dates to the 1980 relocation from Atlanta, where the team played as the Flames from 1972.
