The Black Puma belongs to Niue's long-running animal series struck under licensing arrangements that have made the island's mint program one of the more commercially active among Pacific sovereign issuers — a function of favorable coinage agreements rather than any domestic monetary need. These coins are legal tender in name only; none circulate on the island, and Niue's actual economy runs on the New Zealand dollar.
