The "Black Penny" is one of dozens of licensed colorized collector issues Niue has produced under long-standing agreements with the British Royal Mint and various private minting houses, leveraging its status as a New Zealand realm territory to issue legal tender with Elizabeth II's effigy. The original 1840 Penny Black — the world's first adhesive postage stamp — was printed in an edition of roughly 68 million, yet surviving mint-condition examples command thousands at auction, a reputation these coins trade on directly.
KM#3558 is a New Zealand Mint product struck to bullion-plus-premium pricing, with mintage typically capped to sustain secondary market demand.
