The bilby — a marsupial native to arid Australia, not Cook Islands — appeared on a wave of Pacific island conservation-themed issues in the late 1990s, when nations like Cook Islands leveraged their minting agreements to produce wildlife coins aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. The bilby had become a cause célèbre in Australian conservation circles by this point, actively promoted as an alternative Easter symbol to the rabbit, which is itself one of the most destructive introduced species in Australian ecological history.
