New Zealand's dollar coinage in 1979 was still finding its footing a decade after decimalization in 1967. The "Berry portrait" — Arnold Machin's effigy modified by portrait engraver Leslie Durbin — replaced the earlier Machin obverse across Commonwealth issues during the mid-1970s, a quiet but deliberate standardization push coordinated through the Royal Mint. KM#48 saw relatively modest annual mintages throughout its run, and circulation wear on surviving examples tends to concentrate predictably on the shield quartering.
