The Battle of the Coral Sea, fought in May 1942, was the first naval engagement in history where the opposing surface fleets never came within sight of each other — all damage was dealt entirely by carrier-based aircraft. It was tactically inconclusive but strategically decisive, halting the Japanese advance toward Port Moresby and, by extension, the Australian mainland.
