The Battle of Cocos, November 1914, saw HMAS Sydney destroy the German raider SMS Emden off the Direction Island atoll — the first significant naval victory for the newly formed Royal Australian Navy. Cook Islands issued this piece as part of a broader commemorative program tied to World War I centenary lead-up projects that proliferated through Pacific island mints in the early 2000s, largely targeting the Australian and New Zealand collector market. The Emden had conducted one of the most audacious commerce-raiding campaigns in naval history before Sydney caught her.
