The Batalha Monastery in central Portugal was begun in 1386 to fulfill a vow made by King João I before the Battle of Aljubarrota, where a heavily outnumbered Portuguese force routed the Castilian army and secured the dynasty. Construction dragged across nearly two centuries and was never technically finished — the so-called Capelas Imperfeitas, the unfinished chapels, remain open to the sky to this day, abandoned when royal patronage shifted to Lisbon's Jerónimos Monastery under Manuel I.
