Reverse description The reverse celebrates the first letter of the Russian (Cyrillic) alphabet, 'Аз' (Az), within an ornate manuscript-style composition rendered in color and relief. At the upper left, a coloured illuminated initial 'А' in the style of a medieval Slavonic manuscript is set within a decorated frame, accompanied by various archaic Cyrillic letterforms and ligatures displayed across the field. At the center, a sculpted angel in long robes stands upon a pedestal inscribed with the Old Church Slavonic word АНГЕЛЪ (Angel) in relief. To the right, a coloured depiction of an open book with Cyrillic text is shown, accompanied by the Cyrillic inscription азъка. The entire composition is framed by an ornamental border featuring interlaced knotwork at the base and floral motifs along the sides, with decorative bead roundels at the corners.
