The Ara tricolor — the Cuban macaw — has been extinct since the mid-19th century, likely wiped out by a combination of habitat destruction and hunting pressure as Cuban sugar plantations expanded. No living specimen has been documented since approximately 1864, and the species is known almost entirely from museum skins and a handful of historical illustrations. Niue's involvement here is purely fiduciary; the island issues collector coinage under licensing arrangements as a revenue stream, with no pretense of local connection to the subject matter.
