Niue's arrangement with the New Zealand Mint has produced dozens of themed collector issues since the 1990s, most under license from entertainment and commercial rights holders. These are legal tender in name only — Niue's actual circulating currency is the New Zealand dollar — and the island's population of roughly 1,600 has never used these coins in trade.
