Cook Islands issued a prolific run of wildlife-themed coinage through the 1990s under licensing arrangements that had little to do with domestic monetary need — these pieces were produced almost entirely for the collector export market, with the islands' association with New Zealand providing the issuing authority while the coins themselves were struck and distributed by overseas minting and marketing firms.
