Niue has operated as a licensed issuer of legal tender collectibles since the 1990s, with its arrangement under New Zealand sovereignty giving it the constitutional standing to produce coins bearing Elizabeth II's effigy while contracting the actual strikes to foreign mints — in this case, the New Zealand Mint in Auckland. The Star Wars licensing program, launched in partnership with Disney and Lucasfilm, ran across multiple years and character releases, of which Obi-Wan Kenobi from the 1977 original film is one installment.
At 5 grams, the flan is smaller than a standard bullion format — clearly aimed at collectors rather than the silver market.
