The Great Aussie Coin Hunt series — first run in 2019, then reprised in 2020–21 — was a circulation-release program designed to drive public engagement with coinage at a moment when cash use in Australia was in measurable decline. Each letter of the alphabet was assigned a motif tied to Australian culture or identity, with complete sets actively traded and hoarded, which means individual letters pulled from circulation are harder to find than the mintage figures suggest.
The "S" release was distributed through Australia Post outlets and participating banks rather than through normal till change, skewing its survival rate in uncirculated condition.
