Reverse description Two quokkas (Setonix brachyurus), the small marsupials endemic to southwestern Australia, are depicted in a naturalistic setting amidst native vegetation including grasses and flowering plants. The larger quokka stands alert in the upper centre of the field, while a smaller individual rests in the foreground, both rendered in fine engraved detail by designer SR. The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark appears to the left of the composition. The legend 'QUOKKA' is inscribed in bold lettering along the upper rim, arching above the design.

Additional information

The quokka coin is part of Perth Mint's long-running Australian Animals bullion series, which has leaned heavily on the country's endemic fauna since the late 1990s as a differentiator in a crowded global silver market. The quokka itself — a small marsupial native almost exclusively to Rottnest Island off the Western Australian coast — became an unlikely internet phenomenon around 2013, when tourists' photographs of the animal appearing to "smile" went viral and drove a measurable spike in visitation to the island.

The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II used here, by Jody Clark, was introduced to Australian coinage in 2019.
