The quokka — a small marsupial native almost exclusively to Rottnest Island off the Western Australian coast — lent its name to that island indirectly: Dutch sailors in 1696 mistook the animals for large rats, naming the island Rottnest, or "rat's nest." The Perth Mint has leaned heavily into quokka imagery for its collectible programs, reflecting both the animal's regional significance and its disproportionate international fame driven by tourist selfie culture in the 2010s.
Pad printing, rather than enamel inlay, is used here for the colorization — a process that applies ink layers directly to the coin surface and is more susceptible to long-term wear than fired enamel.
