Queen Victoria was born 24 May 1819, making 2019 her precise bicentenary. The Royal Australian Mint has a long habit of marking British royal anniversaries on the dollar — partly a function of Australia's constitutional ties, partly reliable collector demand. This particular issue belongs to a broader commemorative program the RAM ran across 2019, cycling through multiple reverses to mark the occasion.
Victoria's reign saw Australia transition from penal colonies to federated nationhood — she died in January 1901, just days after Federation took effect on the first of that month.
