Ginger Meggs debuted in the Sydney Sunday Sun on 13 November 1921, making the 2021 centenary straightforward to date. The strip's creator, James Bancks, drew it until his death in 1952, after which it passed through several hands and remains in continuous publication — one of the longest-running comic strips in the world. The pad-printing technique used here allows full-colour reproduction directly onto the coin face, a process the Royal Australian Mint has refined across several collector issues since the early 2010s.
