Ginger Meggs debuted in the Sydney Sunday Sun on 13 November 1921, created by James Bancks as a strip initially titled "Us Fellas." It became one of the longest continuously running comic strips in the world, outlasting its creator and passing through multiple cartoonists' hands across a century of publication. The pad-printing technique used on this issue — applying color directly onto the coin surface rather than through traditional enamel inlay — was by 2021 still a relatively recent addition to the Royal Australian Mint's production repertoire, first adopted in the mid-2010s.
