The Australian Kookaburra series has run continuously since 1990, making it one of the longest-lived bullion programs from any mint. Each year's reverse carries a new kookaburra design — a deliberate policy that drives date collectors and keeps secondary market premiums above melt. The 2022 issue marks the first year of Ian Rank-Broadley's sixth portrait of Elizabeth II appearing on Australian bullion coinage, a transition that occurred just months before her death in September of that year.
The multiple KM references reflect distinct privy mark and finish variants struck for that year, a practice Perth has used aggressively since the 1990s to segment collector markets across different distribution channels.
