The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II on Australian coinage was introduced in 1998, the work of sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials IRB appear below the truncation. His effigy replaced the Raphael Maklouf portrait that had been in use since 1985. 2019 marks the final full year this portrait appeared on circulating Australian dollars before the mint began transitioning ahead of the Queen's death in 2022.
The aluminium bronze alloy used for this series has remained unchanged since the dollar's introduction in 1984 — a deliberate choice for its resistance to corrosion in tropical climates across Australia and the Pacific territories where these coins circulate.
