The Zoo Series was issued by the Royal Australian Mint as a circulating commemorative program, with individual animals selected to raise public awareness of endangered species. The Sumatran orangutan was listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN at the time of issue, its wild population having declined sharply due to palm oil plantation expansion across Borneo and Sumatra throughout the 1990s and 2000s. The pad-printing technique — applied colour over struck metal — was still relatively novel for Australian circulating coinage in 2012, having only recently become practical at mint production volumes.
