The Zoo Series was issued in partnership with Taronga Zoo in Sydney and the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, with proceeds supporting wildlife conservation programs run by the Zoological Parks Board of New South Wales. The lowland gorilla piece references the long-running captive breeding efforts at Taronga, which has maintained western lowland gorillas since the 1970s. Pad printing — a process borrowed from industrial product marking — was adopted by the RAM to achieve photographic-quality color on circulating coinage, a technique that remained unusual among sovereign mints at the time of this issue.
