| Reverse description | A stylised depiction of a Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti) rendered in a bold, cartoon-like style intended for a younger audience, shown centrally in the field with its long legs extended and its distinctive bulbous abdomen prominently displayed within a circular inner border. A detailed cobweb is depicted in the upper right quadrant of the field. The inscription 'REDBACK SPIDER' arcs across the upper portion of the design in a playful, stylised font. The Perth Mint mintmark 'P' appears in the lower field, with the engraver's initials 'EM' to the right. |

The "Young Collectors" series was the Royal Australian Mint's deliberate push to bring children into coin collecting, issuing circulating dollars with native fauna at a price point that kept them accessible. The redback spider — Latrodectus hasselti — was an obvious choice for that brief, uneasy thrill of ownership: one of the few Australian animals genuinely dangerous to humans, responsible for thousands of recorded bites annually before the introduction of antivenom in 1956.
