Australia's lunar series coins from the Perth Mint are produced in strict limited quantities by year, and the 2014 Horse issue was no exception. The "Thunderbolt" designation refers to a specific colored or privy-marked release within the broader Year of the Horse program — Perth routinely issues multiple variants per lunar animal, each differentiated by finish, colorization, or special marks to segment the collector market.
The Chinese lunar calendar's Year of the Horse ran from January 31, 2014. Perth had been producing Australian legal tender lunar coins since 1996, originally under the Lunar Series I program before transitioning to Series II in 2008.
