Aanvullende informatie

Australia's 2009 International Year of Astronomy commemorations marked the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first telescopic observations of the night sky — a fact the UN and IAU jointly used to anchor the global program. The Perth Mint produced multiple designs under the IYA banner that year, of which the "Stargazing" issue was the circulating commemorative dollar.

Aluminium bronze was the standard alloy for Australian dollar coins by this point, introduced with the denomination's launch in 1984 when Australia abandoned its large bronze cent coinage.
