Australia issued a series of commemorative dollars for the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games — the first time the Games had returned to Australia since Brisbane in 1982, and only the second Australian hosting overall after Melbourne's original 1956 iteration. The Royal Australian Mint produced multiple designs across the series, cycling through sports and emblems, which means this KM#804 is one of several collector-targeted releases from the same program rather than a standalone commemorative.
Circulation of the broader series was uneven; many pieces moved through change but a substantial portion was absorbed immediately by collectors, leaving surviving examples disproportionately in uncirculated condition.
