Issued to mark the centenary of Australia's involvement in World War One, this dollar introduced pad printing to Australian circulation coinage — a first for the Royal Australian Mint. The red poppy applied via that process directly references the association between Flanders poppies and the Western Front dead, an image embedded in Anglophone remembrance culture since John McCrae's 1915 poem "In Flanders Fields." The pad-printed colour was not expected to survive heavy circulation, making well-preserved examples increasingly difficult to source from change.
