Additional information

World Youth Day 2008 brought an estimated 500,000 pilgrims to Sydney — the largest peacetime gathering in Australian history — and the Royal Australian Mint issued this dollar to mark the occasion. The pad-printing process, applied directly to the coin's surface rather than struck into it, was relatively novel for Australian circulation issues at the time and gave the colored design a vibrancy that conventional die work could not achieve.
