Reverse description The reverse is divided into four quadrants by a bold cross, commemorating Australia's entry into the First World War. The upper-left quadrant depicts a classical allegorical figure of Britannia, helmeted and robed, gesturing commandingly before a Union Jack; the lower-right quadrant shows a column of uniformed Australian soldiers marching in step with rifles at the slope. The upper-right quadrant carries the incuse inscription 1914 ~ "WHEN THE EMPIRE IS AT WAR, and the lower-left quadrant continues SO IS AUSTRALIA AT WAR". The Perth Mint privy mark P appears at the base of the design.
