Issued to mark the United Nations International Year of Volunteers, which the UN formally designated in 2001 following a General Assembly resolution in 1997. Australia's participation was substantial — an estimated six million Australians were recorded as active volunteers at the time of issue, a figure that shaped the government's decision to commemorate the program with a circulating coin rather than a collector-only release.
