Additional information

Part of Perth Mint's long-running Antarctic animal series, this issue was released at a time when the mint was aggressively expanding its bullion collector program into themed wildlife coinage — a strategy that made Perth one of the dominant players in the 1 oz silver round market by the early 2010s. The Heard Island and McDonald Islands provide Australia's territorial claim to sub-Antarctic waters, giving the Commonwealth a plausible geographic justification for the penguin subject.

KM#1452 is one of dozens of near-identical format releases from this period, distinguishable primarily by reverse subject and year.
