Horrie was a Javanese street dog smuggled out of the Middle East by Private James "Jimmie" Moody of the 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion during the North Africa campaign. Trained informally as a mascot and war dog, Horrie reportedly detected enemy aircraft before audible warning systems could, saving lives on multiple occasions. Australian quarantine law required his destruction upon return — Moody defied the order for years, hiding him until authorities finally intervened in 1943. The dog's story was published by Moody in 1945 and became one of the more affecting animal accounts to emerge from the Second World War.
