The Great Aussie Coin Hunt, launched by the Royal Australian Mint in 2019, was a circulation release program that distributed 26 themed dollars — one for each letter of the alphabet — through supermarket change across the country. The campaign was deliberately designed to revive public engagement with coinage at a moment when contactless payments had begun seriously eroding cash transactions in Australia. It worked: certain letters generated enough collector demand to disappear from circulation almost immediately after release, with some trading at multiples of face value on secondary markets within weeks.
