Additional information

Released to coincide with Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, this is one of several New Zealand legal tender issues produced under a licensing arrangement with Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema. New Zealand's mint program leaned heavily into Tolkien tie-ins throughout the trilogy's release window, issuing coins at nearly every film milestone from 2012 onward. The selective gold plating was applied post-strike, a finishing technique increasingly common in the commemorative bullion market after the mid-2000s.
