The Australian Stock Horse breed traces directly to the horses imported by the First Fleet in 1788 — a mix of Thoroughbreds, Arabians, and Timor ponies that adapted rapidly to harsh Australian conditions. The breed earned particular distinction during the Boer War, where Australian mounted units relied on them heavily, and again in World War I with the Australian Light Horse. Perth Mint's bullion series have historically used the Stock Horse as a recurring subject, this being one of several annual releases in a collector-driven program that runs parallel to the standard Kangaroo bullion series.
