The Australian Stock Horse breed traces directly to the horses imported by the First Fleet in 1788 — a mix of Thoroughbreds, Arabians, and Timor ponies that adapted over generations to the continent's harsh conditions. By the Boer War, the breed's endurance had made it the mount of choice for the Australian Light Horse, whose charge at Beersheba in 1917 remains one of the last successful cavalry charges in military history.
Perth Mint released this issue as part of its ongoing bullion series celebrating Australian animals and icons. The Stock Horse had appeared on earlier Australian coinage but this 2015 release marked its first dedicated silver bullion treatment under the fourth portrait.
