Issued as part of Perth Mint's ongoing military commemorative program, this coin marks the Royal Australian Navy's submarine service, which traces its operational history to 1914 when AE1 and AE2 were commissioned — AE1 disappearing without explanation in the Bismarck Sea within weeks of the war's outbreak. The pad-printing technique applied to the surface allows color detail that conventional die-striking cannot achieve, though it remains a applied process rather than an intrinsic part of the metal.
