Part of Perth Mint's long-running Antarctic series, this issue marks the South Magnetic Pole — not to be confused with the geographic South Pole. The magnetic pole shifts continuously due to changes in Earth's core, and in 2009 it sat well off the Antarctic landmass, drifting northwest into the Southern Ocean at roughly 40–50 kilometers per year. The pad-printing technique used for the color element was still relatively novel in Australian commemorative coinage at this time, applied after striking rather than during it.
