Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, May Gibbs's gumnut babies, first appeared in 1918 — making this a centenary issue. Gibbs created the characters partly as a rebuttal to imported British fairy-tale tradition, deliberately grounding her fantasy in the Australian bush rather than European woodland. The Royal Australian Mint used pad printing to render the colour detail, a process that limits these pieces to collector packaging from the outset; none entered general circulation.
