New Zealand's 2008 dollar series replaced the Machin effigy with Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II while simultaneously overhauling the reverse subjects. Hillary had died in January of that year, and the Reserve Bank moved quickly — the timing meant this circulation issue functioned as an immediate memorial without being explicitly designated one. He had appeared on the five-dollar note since 1992, but this was his first placement on a coin intended for general circulation.
