Australia's Special Air Service Regiment was raised in 1957, modelled directly on the British SAS after Australian officers observed the regiment during the Malayan Emergency. The 2007 issue marks the regiment's fiftieth year. Pad printing — a process borrowed from industrial manufacturing that transfers ink via a silicone pad onto curved surfaces — was still a novelty in Australian commemorative coinage at this date, applied here to achieve colour detail that conventional die-striking cannot produce.
