Released to coincide with Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong, filmed in Wellington, this coin is one of several New Zealand issues capitalizing on the country's growing identity as a major film production hub following the success of Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy. The partial gold plating on the reverse — applied selectively rather than as a full wash — was an uncommon finishing technique for the Royal Australian Mint at the time, used here to differentiate Kong himself from the surrounding design elements.
